About the class

In this ninety-minute session, we will get deep into the business side of writing and publishing.

Nina will explain the revelation she had and subsequent steps she took to transform her career. Elana will share the highs and lows of being a “free range” author, rather than finding and following a brand. This class will be useful for emerging writers new to the industry and published authors alike.

We'll be transparent about rejections and successes, surprises and setbacks and risk-taking. We’ll dive into the pleasures and challenges of collaboration. We'll explain the many facets of a publishing team and clarify the different roles of agent, editor, publicist, etc.

Most of all, we will turn our attention to what you want to know about the business of writing. You'll be able to pre-submit questions and/or ask them live. These questions can be broad or specific to your current concerns. As career writers with many books published or forthcoming across many publishing houses (fifteen from Nina and thirty from Elana) and who have written for all ages, from picture books to adult literature and everything in between, we have a wealth and range of experience to draw on. 

From querying agents to understanding advances, maintaining relationships with editors to making big pivots, setting expectations around publicity and sales to selling on proposal, we're so looking forward to sharing what we know with you. This workshop will be held on January 31st at 10am PST. It will be recorded and sent out in case you can't make it.
